Today in my music education class we read a really interesting article which I have linked below. It’s about the benefits of music in the elementary schools, including scientific data proving just how powerful it is. I think anyone that wants to be a teacher or even a parent should read it. I found it fascinating how when one is engaged in performing music, all the muscles in the cerebral cortex are in use, virtually the whole brain is working. The more these muscles are exercised the more brain power one has. This is something we want our students to have….and the younger it starts the better. Why is music important in a child’s education?

Music enriches a child’s educational experiences. There are strong links between learning in music and in other areas of the school curriculum, such as musical note values and fractions, and reading words and reading music. Music can be related to many different subjects. The study of music also provides students with an understanding of important aspects of their culture that are unavailable through any other means. They can also learn about other time periods and cultures through different aspects of music. Music is an excellent way for children to understand and express human feelings such as excitement, sadness, or joy.
